The customer

The Augsburg Stadtklinik (Ausburg municipal hospital), financed by the Evangelische Diakonissenanstalt, a charitable ecclesiastical institution, is a hospital providing wards staffed by non-resident doctors, with four nursing wards and 140 beds. More than forty in-patient doctors qualified in surgery, gynaecology, internal medicine, urology and anaesthesia, together with approximately 250 staff, treat over 10,000 patients per year, providing medical and nursing care on both an in-patient and out-patient basis. Besides the municipal hospital, a hotel, a restaurant, an old people's home and various schools are also operated on the grounds.

Menu capture for hospital patients

The use

Nutrition is of great importance to the governing body of the institution and hospital management - it is a significant component in the patient's healing process. In order to provide patients with a selection of individual meals, management decided to invest in the kitchen. In this context, meal distribution was changed from the conventional ladle system to the more modern tray system. Instead of the nursing staff, four specially trained service personnel now take the patients' orders, and patients can select individual meals from a menu. These are dished up as portions on a tray and then distributed. In order to support these processes, a decision was taken to opt for the CASIO IT-800. This hand-held terminal combines ergonomics and high performance with optimum robustness. Besides the benefits in daily use, the IT-800, together with OrgaCard software, can enable a savings potential of up to 20%. Above all, this potential relates to a reduction in overproduction volumes in the kitchen. The hospital management believes that the total cost for reorganisation, including the changes in the kitchen, will pay itself off after three years at the latest. In addition, the new solution with the Casio hand-held devices can in future still be extended: For instance, direct order data synchronisation via the IT-800 integrated WLAN module is not inconceivable. And numerous other fields of application also appear to be possible. The integrated two-megapixel camera could be used to introduce clean and efficient wound documentation, enabling recording of the healing process and storage on the digital patient file.

Practical experiences

"This was the smoothest introduction of an innovation I have ever experienced", said nutrition assistant Anita Nachtrub of the integration of the OrgaCard System. Cook Karin Schirmer commented that: "Ordering food now has an entirely new priority at our hospital; this is particularly noticeable by the fact that we now have specially qualified personnel for meal orders."
