The customer

As a leading provider of glass gifts in Germany, LEONARDO offers modern glass designs for the home, and is one of Europe's most treasured glass brands. The company's permanent product range, which includes more than 2000 items, is brought up to date each year with around 800 new products. There are more than 6000 retail outlets around the world, each of which is supplied with the latest products.

Mobile data capture with the CASIO DT-X7

The use

Mobile recording of order data is primarily used in two sales areas: During the regular visits that field staff make to branches, shops and retail outlets, and also during special product presentations and trade fairs across Europe. A special attraction at the company is the glass cube — an eye-catching showroom at its head office in Bad Driburg that gives customers the opportunity to view the latest products on offer from LEONARDO and montana in an ideal atmosphere, and to submit their orders. As at other trade fairs and shop visits, the typical order process is as follows: The sales representative begins recording the order on his hand-held terminal by entering the customer number, or alternatively by creating a new entry for the customer. The sales representative, together with the customer, then views the range by referring to the products on display. If the customer orders an item, the sales representative scans the EAN bar code directly from the product. On the colour display of the hand-held device, the sales representative will now be able to see the current item master data, e.g. name, purchase price, retail price, any special price, stock and the delivery time.

It was clear from the outset that the investment in the new software and new CASIO devices will pay off very quickly. The cost of manually processing one order is calculated at approximately EUR 8 per day. With a daily average of around 250 orders, which are sent into LEONARDO head office via mobile data logging using MobiDiK and automated data transfer, this results in cost savings of EUR 2000 per day. "But we can't value the results in this way", says Ralph Unterbäumer. He continues: "Rationalisation and cost savings are not the priority here, but rather minimising errors and optimising sales processes. Our ultimate objective is to reduce order processing times and ensure fast, error-free delivery for our customers."

Practical experiences

"Our sales staff are even excited about the external features of the hand-held device", says Ralph Unterbäumer, field service manager. "After just an hour of training, the sales team had already mastered the new hardware and software and were looking forward to putting it into operation", recalls Guido Kaltwasser, head of in-house sales staff. The field service manager, Ralph Unterbäumer, continues: "By processing the order without delays and ensuring it ships quickly, it's possible that goods ordered at a trade fair could arrive at the customer's premises before they themselves return home from the event. This makes a real impression."

DT-X7

The product DT-X7

The DT-X7 makes work easier and increases efficiency: the ergonomic hand-held terminal is equipped with a high-performance processor for demanding applications and can be used on a mobile basis in different network environments. This terminal comes with a built-in IrDA and Bluetooth® interface as standard. Reliable reading of barcodes is essential for efficient working performance. The outstanding reading performance of the DT-X7 is achieved with the top-class scanner and improved decoding algorithms. The ergonomic S-design also makes the device easy to operate and the light-weight construction weighing just 145 grams makes it pleasant and easy to handle. The housing is made of robust plastic, offering excellent protection from falls and impact. The robust and highly resistant data recording device is therefore the perfect solution for use in tough working conditions.
