Customer loyalty in the retail sector thanks to digital applications
How innovative software and hardware solutions are optimising inventory management efficiency for the German supermarket chain EDEKA.

Availability, special offers, fresh products: When it comes to shopping for their favourite products, customers in the food retail sector are more demanding than ever. Studies show that customers are reluctant to experiment with their food shopping, often opting for the same products every time they visit the supermarket. This trend offered EDEKA a fantastic opportunity to build customer loyalty in their supermarkets. To ensure that these preferred products are always available and to enable special offers to be planned accordingly, an integrated inventory management system was required behind the scenes that could be applied practically on the shop floor. A mobile data capture system with an innovative retail solution on mobile computers is providing the basis for the inventory management system.

Norderstedt/Hamburg, Germany, April 2018: The food retail sector is currently managed by using a huge number of time-consuming processes. Companies must react to the needs of customers quickly and accurately, ensure the availability of products and manage special offers and pricing. Having reliable information regarding sales, the flow of goods and stock is critical to the success of a food retail company. In the age of digitisation, it seems difficult to be able to optimise delivery of such information without professional technical support. By introducing their new LUNAR retail solution, the EDEKA Group benefited from an increased profit margin and saved time thanks to improved process efficiency.

EDEKA has chosen for the LUNAR retail solution, which is based on SAP and uses mobile data capture (MDC) devices from Japanese company CASIO. The responsibilities of LUNAR GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of EDEKA-Centrale, include developing the company's goods management systems and managing the introduction of innovative software for this food retail giant. Since 2016, the latest version of this software has been increasingly used on the CASIO IT-G500 in EDEKA supermarkets. The LUNAR retail solution automates and optimises all of the important processes in EDEKA supermarkets. This means that the system can support an optimal closed inventory management system across the entire process chain, from ordering, receiving goods, transporting goods and the checkout system to managing inventory and reporting.

"Successful inventory management depends as much on the device as it does on the application", says Thomas Uppenkamp, Manager of Mobile Industrial Solutions at CASIO Europe GmbH, "and CASIO is well known for high quality in the field of mobile data capture". CASIO IT-G500 mobile computers offer optimal ergonomics and a low weight — an important feature for the employees on the shop floor and in the warehouse. This solution offers a keyboard in addition to the touch screen, making it easier to input quantities. These MDCs are equipped with a high-performance imager that can read both 1D and 2D codes extremely quickly. Their long battery life is a further bonus.

CASIO IT-G500 mobile computers have recently been certified by SAP. The rigorous test confirms that the device can be seamlessly integrated into the SAP infrastructure. Data is captured and processed without any compatibility or formatting issues.
